Rights centre blasts police arrest of staff


The Legal and Human Rights Centre (LHRC) has called for full explanation from police force following apprehension of more than 40 LHRC employees on grounds that are yet to be identified during the general elections.

The Centre argued that it was given a valid licence from the National Electoral Commission (NEC) that allowed them to monitor the process of election and collect genuine results from NEC in order to prepare a report on the whole process of election, LHRC Lawyer Harold Sungusia said.
 
‘The report was to be given few days after the general election, showing how the general election was conducted.’

Sungusia said the Centre is determined to claim their legal right in respective organs including defending their employees who were performing their duties within the the law.

Early this week police also raided CHADEMA’s tallying team that were stationed in different parts of the city, and apprehended more than 10 people including three foreigners.
 
They were subsequently arraigned at the Kisutu Court in Dar es Salaam charged with three counts including giving inaccurate and unverified data to wit Tanzania Presidential Election 2015 Results with intent to make publication of inaccurate information online and an on social media of ‘Facebook and Twitter’
